This was the first letter style we used. It is printed on the firm letterhead. This is a conservative style that kept the tradition of the law firm intact. How the firm appeared was very important to me. I thought if another lawyer saw this, then my reputation would continue intact. In this letter, the law firm image is carried through to the reader.
I kept this on the letterhead, but started to use some different style fonts and bold faced type. This was a nice migration that I thought captured the readers interest. I also included some language designed to create fear and mistrust for the reader. This way they would come to us for guidance. Fear, Anger, and Guilt are incredible motivators for people.
I equated this one to a flyer I would find pinned under my car windshield when I come out of the movietheatre. I never really liked it personally, but it was effective. I took a chance on this one because I wanted to have a more effective message than the letters I was sending out.
When we began doing our own direct mail marketing, we spent a lot of time looking on the web, developing different pieces and trying to figure out that which would be most effective to the reader. However, there is a large disconnect between how we as attorneys perceive the world, and how our client's perceive the world. Anything that I designed from my perspective did not do as well as items which were designed by non attorneys. Something to think about as you observe the evolution of our mailing program. Use these samples below to work on your own mailing documents.
By far the most successful mailer I ever used was a mailer enclosed in an envelope that looked like a check. I had the best response rate of all the direct mail pieces I ever sent. I felt it was cheesy, but the fact of the matter was, the phone rang off the hook and the client's came. We did a lot of business with it.
Our latest experiment - the gift card
During the christmas season when I was buying last minute gift cards for everyone I received a parcel in the mail from a credit card company. I didn't look at the envelope, I just happened to feel the credit card inside. That gets the envelope opened. It turns out it was a $5.00 gift card to Verizon if I started a new contract with them. I already had a cell phone, so it didn't work on me, but it is the gift card that gets an envelope opened.
We're going to make this an option for mailing with our service for you.
